Manual Approach to the Brain

Four progressive levels exploring brain anatomy, function and manual therapy applications.

The Manual Approach to the Brain (MATB1 to MATB4) is the most advanced track of the Barral Method. It works with the mechanical and fluid environment of the brain — dura, cranial bones, venous sinuses, cerebrospinal fluid pathways, cranial nerves — without ever manipulating brain tissue directly. MATB3 is taught in person by Jean-Pierre Barral at our Madrid centre, one of the rare modules where practitioners can train directly with the founder of the method. The MATB pathway is the most sophisticated body of manual therapy training currently available — and arrives only after the foundational VM and NM series are complete.

Who this track is for

  • Practitioners with substantial Barral foundation (VM core + NM1–NM4 + LT)
  • Clinicians treating persistent post-concussion, chronic migraine, post-stroke rehab support
  • Manual therapists working at the intersection of neurology and manual therapy
  • Senior Barral practitioners pursuing the BI Diplomate pathway

Prerequisites and progression

Prerequisites are substantial: the full VM core (VM1 to VM5), NM1 to NM4, and Listening Techniques. MATB1 before MATB2; MATB3 (with Barral) typically after MATB1 and MATB2; MATB4 completes the track. Most practitioners reach MATB three to four years into the curriculum.
